The Servant of the Bones (Anne Rice, c1996)

Laughter is the sound of Heaven.

Madness in Kings is common. In fact, I think sanity in kings must be rare... And I understand this. I understand  it because I have looked into the face of Cyrus, the Persian and into the face of Nabonidus, and I know that kings are alone, utterly alone. I have looked into the face of Gregory Belkin, a king in his own right, and I saw this same isolation and terrible weaknessl; there is no mother, there is no father, there is no limit to power, and disaster is the portion of kings.

But we had to survive in Babylon. We had every intention of returning rich to our homeland. We had to be strong. And that meant what it has always meant to the Hebrews. You must be powerful enough to disperse without being destroyed.

Anger is a confusing forces, and hatred is blinding.

There is one purpose to life and one only: to bear witness to and understand as much as possible the complexity of the world - it's beauty, its mysteries, its riddles. The more you understand, the more you work, the greater is your enjoyment of life and your sense of peace. That's all there is to it - everything else is fun and games. If an activity is not grounded in 'to love' or 'to learn', it does not have value.

Be kind. Always, if you have a choice, be kind.... The greatest creative power you have on earth, whether you are an angel, a spirit, or a man or a woman or child is to help others... the poor, the hungry, the oppressed. To ease pain and give joy are your finest powers. Kindness is a human miracle, so to speak.

To learn a new incantation teaches me a new possibility..., but it doesn't increase my power. My power increases with understanding and will.

What makes you think anyone has a destiny? We do what we do and we die.... There is but one Creator God and his name does not matter. Our destiny, for all of us, is to love and to gain greater appreciation and understanding of all around us. Why should yours be any different.

You have to learn that to love is better... to be kind is even better.  In killing you crush a universe of beliefs and feelings and generations in that one person whom yo kill. But when you do kindness, it's like dropping a pebble in the great ocean and the ripples go on forever and ever, and no wave, not even those as far aways as Italy and Egypt, is the same. Kindness actually has considerably more power than killing has.

The purpose of life is to love and to better know the beauty and intricacy of all things.

Give me silence for now. if there can be no peace, there can be silence and there cn be darkness. It could be worse... To be wounded is bad, but not so bad as to kill the innocent and to smile with hate.

...only love and goodness matter. I don't ever want to be swallowed by anger or hate again, and I won't be, no matter how long or hard my journey.

... Altashheth. Do Not Destroy.

Perhaps someday the bones of man will yield the DNA of God.
