Blogging for Money...

A few weeks ago at work, someone asking about blogs was referred to me. At first I thought that his interest in blogging was brought about by wanting to simply share about himself online like do photoblogging and stuff. After a few questions, I found out that what he was really interested in was how to earn through blogs. It was kind of a letdown for me how the opportunities for shared learning through blogs is somehow being overtaken by commercialism. Although there are exceptions, the blogging world is fast evolving from being an opportunity to share thoughts and experiences into an opportunity to sensationalize and earn. I find it sad. It is no longer enough to write about our selves and what we know and hopefully learn from it. Nowadays, we have to write, and not even in the journalistic and factual sense, about things we do not even know and earn from it!

In Emerson's Friendship essay, he wrote about the fear of admiring too much the starry skies of a friend as to lead to forgetting one's own gods. Having been overwhelmed by the "success" that the probloggers have had in the blogging world right after I attended the iBlog3, I did some serious bloghopping in order to see for myself just what really was "out there." I found much, and the only way I could describe them was that they were too many to really be helpful as far as my personal blogging is concerned, and too distracting. So I stuck with what I know. I write about life according to my perspective, particularly focusing on things that help me survive, on struggles that help me grow and on lessons that define who I am. As I've written before, I'm glad to share my humanity. Although to a certain extent, my blogging practice has quite evolved, I still consider myself as a "basic" blogger. I log my presence in the great world wide web by writing about myself. If someone serendipitously read it and learn from it, it is more than enough.

Speaking of the Philippine Blogosphere, the 4th annual Philipine Blogging Summit, scheduled for April 26, is but weeks away. The event is a venue for discussing blogging trends and issues in the Philippines, as well as an opportunity for newbies to learn from the pros, and for local bloggers to meet in person.
